Maltepe University Sustainability Office Participated in the Istanbul Zero Waste Week Launch Meeting
The Sustainability Office of Maltepe University participated in the launch meeting organized for the upcoming Istanbul Zero Waste Week, which will be coordinated by the Istanbul Governorship and the Zero Waste Foundation.
The meeting, hosted by the Zero Waste Foundation on 20 May 2026, brought together Governor of Istanbul Davut Gül, President of the Zero Waste Foundation and COP31 High-Level Climate Champion Samed Ağırbaş, representatives of public institutions, local authorities, universities, private sector organizations, civil society stakeholders, and members of the press. During the program, the scope of the projects to be implemented throughout the week across Istanbul, institutional identity studies, communication strategies, digital campaigns, and joint awareness-raising initiatives were presented to the public in detail.
As part of Istanbul Zero Waste Week, which will take place between 1–7 June 2026, more than 1,500 events and projects are planned across all 39 districts of Istanbul. The initiative aims to promote the culture of zero waste, enhance resource efficiency, and strengthen public awareness of environmental sustainability. Furthermore, it seeks to bring together public institutions, universities, private sector organizations, and non-governmental organizations around a shared vision for sustainability.
Representing the Sustainability Office of Maltepe University, Prof. Dr. Ebru Beyza Bayarçelik, faculty member of the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, attended the meeting and received information regarding the activities planned within the scope of Istanbul Zero Waste Week. She also evaluated potential sustainability-oriented collaboration opportunities and reviewed planned initiatives related to zero waste, circular economy, energy efficiency, and climate change.
Istanbul Zero Waste Week stands out as an important initiative that aims to position Istanbul as a host city for sustainability-related activities at both national and international levels. The program is expected to contribute significantly to the promotion of environmentally responsible lifestyles and to increasing public awareness regarding sustainable development goals.
As Maltepe University, we will continue to support initiatives and projects related to environmental sustainability, circular economy, and zero waste practices in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Within this framework, various awareness-raising and educational activities open to the participation of our students and staff are planned to support Istanbul Zero Waste Week.
