Maltepe University Sustainability Office Participated in the Greenhouse Gas Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Workshop
The Maltepe University Sustainability Office participated in the “Greenhouse Gas Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Workshop”, organized within the framework of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) studies carried out in collaboration with Sancaktepe Municipality and İSTAÇ Inc.
The workshop was held on 20 May 2026 at Samandıra Neighborhood House, with Dr. Mert Tolon, Coordinator of the Maltepe University Sustainability Office and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, representing the Sustainability Office of Maltepe University.
The primary objective of the workshop was to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions at the district level, enhance climate change adaptation capacity, support the development of local sustainability policies, and strengthen SECAP implementation processes. Bringing together public institutions, academics, experts, and local stakeholders, the event provided a multi-stakeholder platform to discuss energy, transportation, waste management, climate adaptation, and sustainable urban development.
During the thematic working group sessions, participants exchanged ideas on energy efficiency, renewable energy applications, carbon management, circular economy practices, sustainable transportation systems, and climate-resilient urban policies. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of energy management, data-driven sustainability practices, and carbon reduction strategies within local governments.
Contributions made on behalf of Maltepe University highlighted the role of universities in sustainable transformation processes, the importance of data-driven decision-making mechanisms, carbon footprint assessment studies, sustainable campus initiatives, and university–local government collaborations. Information was also shared regarding the activities conducted by the Maltepe University Sustainability Office, including the University Climate Action Plan, environmental reporting practices, and the university’s sustainable campus approach.
Throughout the workshop, participants emphasized that climate change adaptation extends beyond disaster management and requires a comprehensive approach encompassing energy security, water management, infrastructure resilience, urban heat island effects, and social vulnerability. It was noted that while carbon mitigation policies are essential for limiting future climate impacts, adaptation policies play a critical role in managing the risks already being experienced today.
