Maltepe University Hosts Sustainability Seminar for Azerbaijani Educators under the Azerbaijan–Türkiye Teacher Exchange Program in Collaboration with Kocaeli Private Marmara College
As part of the Azerbaijan–Türkiye Teacher Exchange Program, carried out in collaboration between Maltepe University and Kocaeli Private Marmara College, a delegation of educators from Azerbaijan was hosted at Maltepe University on Wednesday, April 22, 2026.
Within the scope of the program, a seminar was held in the Faculty of Education, where Assistant Professor Dr. Mert Tolon, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, and Coordinator of the Maltepe University Sustainability Office, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the establishment, areas of activity, and sustainability initiatives carried out by the Maltepe University Sustainability Office.
The seminar addressed a wide range of topics, including the sustainable campus approach, climate change mitigation, energy efficiency, carbon footprint management, resource efficiency, waste management, environmental performance indicators, and sustainability governance. It was emphasized that educational institutions are not only centers of knowledge production but also leading actors in environmental and social transformation. In this context, sustainable campus models and international best practice examples were shared with the participants.
The event also provided information on the carbon footprint assessment studies conducted by the Maltepe University Sustainability Office, the University Climate Action Plan (2023–2030), sustainability guidelines, environmental reporting activities, and projects carried out by the Environmental and Energy Technologies Application and Research Center (CEVENTAM). Through practical examples, participants were introduced to the data-driven sustainability management approach adopted by the university in the fields of energy, water, and waste management.
Another key component of the presentation focused on sustainable campus models and crisis action plans designed to enhance the resilience of educational institutions against disasters and climate-related risks. Experiences and best practices regarding risk management, continuity of energy and water services, emergency preparedness, performance indicators, and institutional coordination mechanisms were shared with the attendees.
During the question-and-answer and evaluation session, Azerbaijani educators exchanged views on the future of sustainable educational campuses, green school practices, and opportunities for international collaboration.
