Turkish Folk Music Major
Turkish Music has a deep-rooted history and holds a unique place in world music with its characteristic features, rich modal structure, and various rhythmic patterns. Today, Turkish music is one of the two most widespread types of music in the world. One of these is tonal music, which is Western music, or polyphonic music. Tonal music was created collectively by the entire Western world. The other is modal music, or monophonic makam music, which refers to Turkish music. Turkish music, with its rich sound system, and variety of modes (makams) and rhythms (usuls), is capable of expressing every emotion and its subtle nuances.
