Using 112 in Emergencies
In Turkey, all emergency health, security and fire services are managed through the 112 Emergency Call Centre. This system ensures that citizens can reach the appropriate services as quickly as possible by dialling a single number in situations requiring assistance.
When Should You Call 112?
112 should only be called in situations involving life-threatening emergencies, requiring immediate intervention, or posing a security risk. For example:
- Loss of consciousness, breathing difficulties, serious injury
- Fire, explosion, gas leak
- Criminal acts requiring immediate intervention
- Traffic accidents
- Suicide attempts or behaviour posing a serious risk
- Calling 112 for non-emergency matters may delay assistance for genuine emergencies.
How Should You Call?
When you call 112, the call centre operator will ask you for specific information to assess the situation accurately. Therefore, during the call:
- Stay calm. Panic makes it difficult to convey information accurately.
- State your location clearly.
- Address
- A nearby landmark
- Location sharing, if possible
- Explain the incident in short, clear sentences.
- What happened?
- How many people are affected?
- What is the condition of the injured?
- Follow the instructions given to you. Call centre operators can guide you through the necessary first aid steps.
- Do not end the call. Staying on the line until the operator ends the call is important for the flow of information.
Why should this line not be occupied unnecessarily?
The 112 Emergency Call Line is a system that operates in situations where seconds are critical. Unnecessary calls:
- May delay a genuine emergency call from reaching the line
- May lead to misdirection
- May result in the inefficient use of public resources
- Therefore, calling 112 for purposes other than its intended use is both unethical and may result in administrative and legal sanctions.
