About Our Faculty

Faculty of Architecture and Design started education and training at Maltepe University in 1997 as the Faculty of Engineering-Architecture. Later renamed as the Faculty of Architecture and Design, the Faculty includes the Department of Nautical Design, the Department of Interior Architecture, and the Department of Architecture, which continues its education and training in two different languages, Turkish and English.

The aim of the Faculty of Architecture and Design is to contribute to the education of individuals who are visionary, have universal values, blend critical and creative thinking within the framework of careful thinking, prioritize people and society, design innovative products and spaces while also considering nature, have a developed aesthetic sensitivity, can apply computer and information technologies to design activities, assume their responsibilities in the light of professional ethical principles, and have high self-confidence. The Faculty has the academic staff, which is a prerequisite for the creation and maintenance of a contemporary educational environment, and the technological infrastructure necessary for students to develop their technical knowledge and skills throughout their education.

The Faculty of Architecture and Design, which has internalized the theoretical and the practical in a complete understanding of integrity, has computer laboratories with up-to-date software applications, design studios and a unique application area called “Hangar”, which is unique in our country. In addition to the theoretical compulsory and elective courses, which are the basic components of education, workshops, frequently organized exhibitions, seminars, conferences, workshops, workshops and study tours make our Faculty privileged.

From a historical point of view, the Department of Architecture, which has existed since the establishment of the Faculty and was accredited by MIAK in 2022, offers two separate diploma programs in Turkish and English, as mentioned above. As a principle, “designing buildings that can be built” is among the basic missions of the departments. Our aim is to contribute to the training of professionals who internalize the unity of human-space in a full-awareness approach not only in the design process, but also at every stage of all activities gathered under the name of “Architecture”.

The primary goal of the Department of Interior Architecture is to ensure that students have the ability to design interior and exterior fittings within the architectural structure and in line with user needs and functions, and to have the knowledge of applying their designs using current technological possibilities.

Founded in 2009, the Department of Nautical Design is the first and only undergraduate program in Turkey and one of only two in the world. The department aims to train national and international designers and scientists who can design various classes of marine vessels, especially yachts.

In our faculty, our students are encouraged to participate in national and international competitions organized by various organizations. Our students have won various awards in these competitions.

Double Major and Minor programs, which are implemented with the foresight of our faculty's experienced academic staff who take into account the knowledge, skills and competencies of the 21st century, are also constantly being developed; interdisciplinarity takes the first place among the indispensable in the contexts of education and research as well as in the framework of relations with external stakeholders.

Our faculty has bilateral agreements with various European universities within the scope of Erasmus exchange programs.

Physical Resources

Prof. Dr. Erkut Özel Library

In addition to the Library and Information Center within our university, the Erkut Special Library, located within the faculty, also hosts the research activities of our students with its resources. Prof. Erkut Private Library serves as a reference library, does not lend books to outsiders, and allows readers to study only within this space. There are around 5000 books and periodicals in the library. Most of the books are indexed, and the process of classifying the large number of books and magazines donated by the Istanbul Metropolitan Branch of the TMMOB Chamber of Architects in 2021, which are TMMOB publications, continues under the coordination of the Faculty Library Commission. The Faculty Library is open to the free use of all our faculty students, and students of our faculty are employed as student assistants in its functioning, especially before the global pandemic. Since the establishment of the Department of Architecture, we have always tried to be a pioneer in our university in terms of the library, to which the founding Head of the Department, Prof. Erkut Özel, has shown special interest and care. With the direct contributions of our faculty members and the contributions of our students and graduates, our faculty library has always been up-to-date with a wide variety of professional journals and books. In the first years of the establishment of our faculty and library, with the principle that every graduating student donated a book to the library, our library has laid a solid foundation for its development, especially in its early years.
