With the motto "From Kindergarten to University," Marmara Education Institutions were founded by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of our University, Hüseyin Şimşek, in 1991. The İstanbul Marmara Education Foundation (İMEV) was established in 1996, and Maltepe University was founded in 1997. Maltepe University was established as a public legal entity in accordance with the Law No. 4282 dated July 9, 1997, and is subject to the provisions of the 2547 Law regarding foundations and higher education institutions. It began its academic education in the 1997-1998 academic year by admitting students through additional quotas.
İMEV, to which Maltepe University is affiliated, continues the tradition of foundations by providing comprehensive services, particularly in the fields of education, health, environment, culture, arts, and social areas.
Marmara Education Village was established in 2002, primarily to gather Marmara Educational Institutions, including İMEV, in a 1000-acre open area and 300-acre enclosed area within the pine forests. Located in this campus, which includes Maltepe University, are the Faculty of Education, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Communication, Faculty of Human and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business Administration and Management Sciences, Faculty of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Conservatory, School of Nursing, Vocational School, and School of Foreign Languages, along with the Graduate Education Institute. These academic units offer associate, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, and many research and application centers are conducting studies as well. Students who complete basic medical science education at the Faculty of Medicine in the Marmara Education Village continue their education at the Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine Education and Research Hospitals located in the central Maltepe campus. Maltepe University provides education and training services through a total of 9 faculties, a conservatory, a Graduate Education Institute, 3 higher education schools, and a vocational school. The university aims to contribute to Turkish and global science through scientific research and publications. The campus also features the 8,000-seat Marmara Open-Air Theater and two 2,000-square-meter film and television studios.
The educational principles of our University are summarized in the motto "Free in thought, modern in education, universal in science." Our primary goal is to prepare young people for Turkey's future who embrace the fundamental principles of the Republic, are Atatürkist, secular, adhere to all democratic principles, and are effective, rational, thinking, reading, researching, producing, and competitive with the youth of the world in every field.
Maltepe University attaches great importance to internationalization. The first steps in this direction were taken in the early 2000s, with the Erasmus Charter obtained in 2004 and the Extended Erasmus Charter in 2007. Maltepe University has always been among the pioneers in the internationalization of universities in our country. To this end, student and faculty exchanges are carried out, and strong connections are established with prestigious universities worldwide for joint research and scientific collaboration. International exchange programs and joint projects are significant indicators of Maltepe University's international character. Additionally, in 2010, diploma supplements were awarded to undergraduate graduates, and in 2012, to graduate graduates.
One of the special areas of focus for Maltepe University from the very beginning has been quality education. Through the establishment of the Quality Management Coordination Office, all processes related to quality in higher education are closely monitored, and Maltepe University is directed with this understanding, primarily for its students, but also for all stakeholders. Maltepe University, with its strong academic and administrative staff, updated programs aligned with the development and expectations of the era, diverse and rich academic infrastructure facilities (laboratories, information and document centers, internet access, etc.), research results shared with society, and social and cultural activities that encourage participation, has secured a distinguished place within the Turkish University System. It continues its "Quality Journey" with all its resources.
