Observed every year on 13 October, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction highlights the importance of reducing disaster risks before emergencies occur and reminds us that preparedness, awareness, and resilience are essential for building safer communities.
One of the most effective ways to reduce the loss of life and property caused by disasters is to identify potential risks in advance and take appropriate preparedness measures. Building a disaster-resilient society requires shared responsibility among public institutions, local authorities, universities, non-governmental organisations, and individuals. Disaster management should therefore focus not only on emergency response after an event, but also on preventive and risk-reduction measures taken before disasters occur.
Preparedness at the individual and family level is one of the most important elements of disaster risk reduction. Developing a family disaster plan, living in safe and resilient buildings, considering appropriate ground conditions, and promoting awareness of insurance are among the key measures that can help reduce the potential impacts of disasters. Preparing an emergency kit, reducing non-structural risks at home, knowing designated emergency assembly areas, and learning the correct actions to take during a disaster are also essential parts of personal preparedness.
As the Maltepe University Search and Rescue Association (MUSAR), we believe that disaster awareness should not be limited to a single day of the year. A safer and more resilient future can only be achieved through knowledge, education, preparedness, cooperation, and social solidarity. We therefore encourage everyone to identify the risks in their own living environment, develop a disaster plan, and make preparedness an integral part of everyday life.
Because “Disaster Preparedness Starts at Home!”
