About the Programme

 

HISTORY

The M.A. program in economics provides students with a background of economic analysis while aiming to teach them the thoughts of pioneers of economists by considering the necessity of renewing the idea of economics in the face of changing conditions in our times. The program also enables the students to participate in the contemporary economical movements and discussions.  

In order to graduate program, students are required to accomplish 30 credit hours and project. In the first semester of the master's program without thesis students should take total 4 courses and in the second semester, students are required to take total 4 courses; a seminar course without credit and three other courses. The third semester is allocated for design project.
 

MISSION

The program highlights conceptional, theoretical and empirical economic studies with reference to the integrity of social sciences, analyzes the decisions of economic units in the context of production relations and the results arised from those decisions, makes policy proposals. 
 

VİSION

The program creates discussion climates for understanding transforming economic paradigms and for comprehending properly their tools.  
 

ACQUIRED DEGREE

Students, who successfully complete the program, are entitled to Master’s degree in Economics.
 

ACQUIRED LEVEL OF QUALIFICATION

It is a program that provides graduate education at Second Cycle level.
 

 ACQUIRED DEGREE REQUIREMENTS AND RULES

Learners studying in the master program without thesis are required:

  • To take at least 10 courses (30 local credits) and enroll in the Term Project, and complete 120 ECTS. (The Term Project does not have local credit and is assessed with a pass or fail).
  • To get at least a grade of DD in order to be successful in each course of the program,
  • To have 2.50 general average grades out of 4.00 on the core subjects, and
  • To be successful in the term project.


DESCRIPTION OF PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

A student who is currently enrolled in a Master's Degree program in the same discipline at another institution and has successfully completed at least one semester, upon submitting all required documents before the deadline, may transfer to the Master's Program at Maltepe University upon the recommendation of the department administration and with the approval of the Administrative Committee of the Graduate School of Social Sciences. The decision taken will also include eligibility for exemption from some course requirements of the graduate program. Students who transfer from another university must be successful in the Maltepe University English Proficiency Exam or in an equivalent English examination.

Graduates from other disciplines are accepted to the program provided they take undergraduate courses to make them ready to take graduate courses.   

Recognition of prior non-formal and in-formal learning will also be considered although rules and regulations are not yet adequately developed in Turkish Higher Education System.


THE DEFINITION OF THE PROGRAM

Economics Master’s Degree Program aims to provide students a strong basis of economic analysis. In the face of the necessity of renewed economic thought in view of changing conditions, the program promises to teach them accumulations of pioneer thinkers of economics, and to bring them skills of attendance to discussions between modern economics schools.

TRANSFER TO A HIGHER STAGE

The students who graduated from Economics Master’s program may apply to study in Ph.D. programs (third cycle) in the same field or other fields.


PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The Graduate School of School of Social Sciences Economics Master’s Program (without thesis option) has compulsory seminar and 9 courses, 30 local credits and 120 ECTS.

 

EXAMS, EVALUATION AND GRADING

Exams

Learners take at least one quiz, one mid-term exam (or a project) and an end of term exam.

Students take at least one quiz, one mid-term or a project and an end of term exam whose number is determined by the instructor.

Students are informed beforehand about the mid-term exam dates and the subjects that the students will be responsible for. The numbers and dates of mid-term exams are announced by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. Mid-terms are given during the pre-determined hours for that course. Excuses of those students who have not taken the mid-term exam or taken part in studies are evaluated by the instructor, and the procedure is determined by the board of management of the institute.

In end of term exams, student’s knowledge and performance in that semester is tested, and they are extremely significant in evaluation of student’s success. To what extent this exam affects the student’s success is determined by the instructor and is announced at the beginning of the term. Starting and finishing dates of end of term exams are determined by senate and can be seen in academic calendar published at the beginning of the term.

Excuses of those students who have not taken the mid-term exam are evaluated by the board management of institute. Providing that the documents proving the excuses are admitted, excuse exam dates are announced.
 

Evaluation and Grading

Instructors evaluate each registered student by taking quiz, mid-term exam and final exam results, and the studies that substitute exams into consideration. As a result of the evaluation, s/he appreciates one of the grades below as the student's final grade.

AA, BA, BB, CB and CC mean that the course has been completed successfully. DC and DD grades show that the course has been completed successfully providing that the student has fulfilled the requirements depending on grade average point which was specified in the regulations. Grade F shows that the student has been unsuccessful. Even if the grade average point of a student who has got an F grade is enough to be considered as successful, this course is retaken. The letter grades specified above are based on evaluations of midterm and final exams and papers written by the students. Final grades are given on the basis of normal distribution of scores in the class. However, these letter grades are considered to correspond to the following intervals out of a hundred: AA 90-100; BA 85-89; BB 80-84; CB 75-79; CC 70-74; DC 60-69; DD 50-59; F 49 and below.

Special condition of students in a course is shown with the letters below:

Student has succeeded in a course without credit or in one that is not included in the average

BZ  (unsuccessful)

Student has been unsuccessful in a course without credit or in one that is not included in the average

EK   (incomplete)

In a condition of incompleteness resulting from the student, the instructor takes valid excuses into consideration and asks the student to compensate those imperfections. Providing that the imperfections are not compensated maximum in two weeks after passing grades are announced, the mark of incomplete, changes to an F grade.

Successful Students

Students are regarded as successful according to their General Average Grade. In order to be graduated as successful, students have to have 2.50 General Average Grade in a Master's program.

Students who graduate from their departments or complete their programs with 3.50-4.00 General Average Grade are appreciated as University high honor students and they are on the list of University Honor Students List.
